If you have been married 20 years or longer you may not be aware that there has been a fundamental shift in how teens and young adults view and experience sex. No longer is it a social taboo to be sexuality active and virginity until marriage is seen as a radical and weird lifestyle. This has had a devastating impact. When I began my ministry it was a rare thing to have a couple ask me to perform their wedding that were living together. However, now it is a rarity to find couples that are not living together and even rarer still those who have saved their virginity for marriage. The purpose of this sermon is not to shame but make the case for why we should live lives of purity.

Sermon preached by Pastor Ben Smith during the October 11, 2015, morning worship service.

It seems that what often is used to judge if something is right or wrong is whether or not it makes you happy. This argument is the foundational argument for the sexual permissiveness of our culture. The Bible does not promise happiness. In fact it says that the followers of Jesus will know persecution (that’s not very happy). The Bible calls the followers of Jesus to live holy lives. Living righteously for the Lord produces great joy even if in this world we know suffering. In this sermon pastor Ben will make the case that we must reject the weak and false pursuit of happiness and instead surrender all of who we are to the Lord. This surrender includes our sexual desires.

We are the creation of God. Foundational to the understanding of God the creator is recognizing that God’s creation was perfect and good. Today many are teaching that maleness and femaleness is a cultural imposition not a fundamental part of who we are. Out of this has grown confusion about gender and a rejection of the goodness of being made male or female. In this sermon pastor Ben contends that being a male or a female is not something we can choose or change but part of the sovereign will and good creation of God.
